The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says the authority is putting measures in place to avoid the re-occurance of boat mishaps across the country.
This was disclosed by the Area manager, Engineer Adoga Titus Samuel on Thursday in Lokoja,while he received the Maiyaki of Kupa, HRH, Alhaji Dauda Kabir Isah in his office.
According to Samuel,, boat mishaps are mainly as a result of mechanical, human and natural factors such as overloading, careless driving, speeding, negligence, turbulent weather and wreckages.
He said that night sailing, untrained boat drivers and flagrant disregard for safety regulations among others were major causes of boat mishaps.
Engineer Samuel noted that NIWA being the regulator of the Inland Waterways Transportation System had, however, initiated measures aimed at addressing the menace of boat mishaps in Nigeria.
Speaking earlier,the Maiyaki of Kupa , Alhaji Daudu Kabir Isah said they were in the area manager’s office to expressed his subjects gratitude to management of NIWA for their quick response and appealed to NIWA for more synergy with the riverine communities in the state.
The monarch explained further to avoid future occurrence,his has since began safety sensitisation and awareness campaign.
Highlights of the visit was the presentation of safety kits by the area manager Engineer Samuel to Mayank of Kupa.
