Kano 10-megawatt hydropower plant completes and testing begins January 10, 2023

The Kano State government has announced the completion of its 10 megawatt hydroelectric plant at the Tiga dam.

Kano Hydro and Energy Development Company (KHEDCO) managing director Hadiza Tukur told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday.

Ms. Tukur said the power plant will serve the state’s water treatment plant in Tamburawa and public lighting in the metropolis, among others.

She said the power plant is awaiting certification from the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).

“At the plant we have two generators, one vertical that will generate 8 megawatts of power and the other horizontal that will generate two megawatts of power making ten megawatts. That is why it is called Tiga ten megawatts of power.

“Everything is being completed, pre-commissioning testing is underway, what remains is the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) certification.

“Another thing he’s also looking forward to is automation when it’s complete, we’re going to turn on the water and allow the turbine to spin. We have obtained permission from the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority.

“The eight megawatts are being tested without load, but in the next two weeks we are going to test them with load. The same applies to the two megawatts.

“The transmission line has been fully completed from the Tiga Power Plant to the Tamburawa Waterworks. We are generating at 33kv and also transmitting at 33kv but when we get to the water treatment plant we have a 33-11 step-down transformer.

“On the control panel, there are two selections, one for hydropower and the other for Kano Electricity Distribution Company KEDCO, this is in case we decide to shut down the hydropower plan for maintenance.

“From the Tamburawa substation, another line will move outward and connect to the 2.5 MVA transformer substation that is connected to the street line in the Kano metropolis.

“God willing, in the next four weeks, Tiga’s ten megawatts of electricity will be transmitted to the Tamburawa water scheme and street lighting in Kano, with this, many government burdens will be reduced and public services will no longer be paid. . the bill for the water treatment plant and the purchase of generators or the purchase of diesel for the generator that lights the streets,” said Ms. Tukur.
