Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed a newly elected councillor in Shiroro local government area of Niger state.
Our correspondent gathered that the councillor identified as Saleh Alawa was killed by unidentified gunmen, while on his way from Zumba to his village, Allawa community when he unknowingly ran into the bandits.
According to report, personal aide to the councillor was said to have escape into the bush, unhurt.
It was further gathered that the area has been part of the bandits hideout and where they operate at random constituting security risk even for the forthcoming general elections.
Our correspondent reliably gathered that youths in their numbers are in search of the criminals, and out of anger apprehended an informant at Gwada town and have handed him over to the police for more investigation and prosecution.
Sources told AljazirahNigeria in Minna, that the youths in the area are frustrated over the incessant attacks and killing of innocent people hence have continue to embark on vigorous search to assist the security agencies in arresting the culprits.
When contacted, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Wasiu Abiodun could not be reached at the time of filing the report.
But, state commissioner for Internal Security, Mr Emmanuel Umar confirmed the incidence and promised to ensure that the culprits were apprehended.
