Police arrest Northern activist for “insulting Adesina and staging protest against banditry in Katsina”

Nastura Ashir Sharif, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has been arrested and detained at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He was arrested and moved to Abuja shortly after the peaceful protests in Katsina against incessant killings by bandits and allegedly insulting presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina.

Spokesman for the CNG, Abdulaziz Sulaiman, confirmed the arrest to DAILY NIGERIAN, saying Mr Sharif was arrested at the Katsina State Police Command before he was immediately transferred to Abuja.

“The protest was conducted peacefully under police cover. After the protest, Nastura Ashir Sharif led our team to meet the Kano State Commissioner of Police to express our appreciation for giving us cover to conduct a peaceful protest.

“While there, the CP announced that he was instructed to immediately arrest and transport Sharif to Abuja for interrogation.

“At the police headquarters in Abuja, the police accused him of insulting Femi Adesina and staging protest in Katsina,” Mr Sulaiman told DAILY NIGERIAN.

Efforts to get the reaction of the police failed as force spokesman, Frank Mba, neither answered our reporter’s call nor replied to a text message seeking his response on the matter.
